Configure Windows XP to Connect to cavalier

Note:The preferred method for configuring Windows XP to connect to cavalier is to use the ITS Network Setup Tool. Only attempt these instructions if the ITS Network Setup Tool fails on your system.

These instructions are designed for use when connected to a network at the University of Virginia.

  1. Connect your computer with an Ethernet cable to the wired network and open a Web browser.
    • If your browser automatically connects to the UVa Network Device Registration page, follow the instructions to register your wired connection. Reboot when prompted.
    • If your browser does not automatically connect to the Network Device Registration page, and you are able to visit other websites, your wired connection is already registered and you can continue to the next step.
  2. Get a personal digital certificate following the instructions. Answer the prompts provided and accept the certificate download when asked.
  3. When in range of the cavalier network, a pop-up bubble indicating that networks are in range will apear; you may need to reboot before it will appear. Click anywhere in the bubble except the "X".
  4. The Wireless Network Connection window will appear.
  5. From the Choose a wireless network choices, select cavalier, then click the Connect button.
  6. The next pop-up balloon should read Click here to process your logon information for the network cavalier. Again, click anywhere but the "X".
  7. The next pop-up should be titled Validate Server Certificate. Click the OK button. If this pop-up does not appear, you need to configure XP to manage your wireless connection.
  8. Unplug your wired connection and open a Web browser. When you are automatically connected to the UVa Network Device Registration page, follow the instructions to register your wireless connection. Reboot when prompted.
    • Note: You will be repeating the registration process from step 2, but this time for your wireless connection.
  9. Verify that your system automatically connects to the cavalier wireless network and you can connect to websites both on- and off-Grounds.

If you need additional assistance, refer to the Windows XP cavalier Wireless Network Troubleshooting or contact the UVa Help Desk.
