Connect Windows to the eduroam Wireless Network

Before You Configure for eduroam WiFi...

Requirements to Connect

Connect Windows to eduroam WiFi

Windows 7

If asked to trust the certificate for wireless.itc.virginia.edu, choose agree.

  1. From the Start menu, select Control Panel, then Network and Sharing Center.
  2. From the left menu, select Manage Wireless Networks.
  3. Click the Add button and then choose Manually create a network profile.
  4. Enter the following information:
    1. In the Network name field, type eduroam
    2. From the Security types dropdown, select WPA2-Enterprise.
    3. From the Encryption type dropdown, select AES.
    4. Check the Start this connection automatically box.
    5. Click the Next button.
  5. Select Change connection settings.
    1. Under the Connection tab, check the Connect automatically…
    2. Click the Security tab.
    3. From the Choose a network authentication method dropdown, select Microsoft Smart Card or other certificate.
    4. Click the Settings button.
      1. In the eduroam Wireless Network Properties window, be sure the "Choose a network authentication method:" starts Microsoft: Smart Card or other certificate and click on Settings.

      2. In the Smart Card or other Certificate Properties window, use the scroll bar on the right side of the Trusted Root Certification Authorities box to scroll down to USHER CA1 v1, and place a checkmark in the box to the left of the first one.

      3. Click OK to save the selection of the USHER certificate and close the security settings box.
      4. Click OK in the eduroam Wireless Network Properties window to end configuration.
    5. You should see Successfully added eduroam in the Change connection settings... window. Click the Close button.

Windows 8.1 & 10

If asked to trust the certificate for wireless.itc.virginia.edu, choose agree.

  1. From the Start menu, select Control Panel, then Network and Sharing Center.
  2. From the left menu, select Set up a new connection or network.
  3. Select Manually connect to a wireless network, then click the Next button.
  4. Enter the following information:
    1. In the Network name field, type eduroam
    2. From the Security types dropdown, select WPA2-Enterprise.
    3. From the Encryption type dropdown, select AES.
    4. Check the Start this connection automatically box.
    5. Click the Next button.
  5. Select Change connection settings.
    1. Under the Connection tab, check the Connect automatically…
    2. Click the Security tab.
    3. From the Choose a network authentication method dropdown, select Microsoft: Smart Card or other certificate.
    4. Click the Settings button.
      1. In the eduroam Wireless Network Properties window, be sure the "Choose a network authentication method:" starts Microsoft: Smart Card or other certificate and click on Settings.

      2. In the Smart Card or other Certificate Properties window, use the scroll bar on the right side of the Trusted Root Certification Authorities box to scroll down to USHER CA1 v1, and place a checkmark in the box to the left of the first one.

      3. Click OK to save the selection of the USHER certificate and close the security settings box.
      4. Click OK in the eduroam Wireless Network Properties window to end configuration.
    5. You should see Successfully added eduroam in the Change connection settings... window. Click the Close button.
