Training of Technical Trainers (TOTT)

Course Overview

ITS offers a four-day TOTT (Training of Technical Trainers) workshop designed for people who have been involved in technical training, but who lack an apprenticeship in training theory, design, and delivery. The purpose of this program is to increase your knowledge and skills. The workshop will be offered every 2 or 3 months depending on the demand (see schedule). There is no fee for the workshop and there are no prerequisites, however there is a $20 no-show fee for each day of the workshop. The class is limited to 10 people.

Days 1 and 2

An interactive workshop where you will learn about:

  • conducting introductions
  • indentifying adult learning behaviors and motivators
  • analyzing performance-based training
  • evaluating instructional design
  • delivering performance-based training
  • encouraging participation
  • facilitating training
  • managing challenges

Days 3 and 4

You will prepare a 30-minute presentation on Windows or Word (or other approved topic of your choice) where you will have a chance to practice what you have learned on Days 1 and 2. We provide the instructor materials for you to use in your presentation. The other participants in the class will provide feedback on your presentation.

Certification

UVa's Technical Trainers Certification is awarded to individuals who have consistently demonstrated their ability to apply the concepts presented in the Training of Technical Trainers workshop. The workshop provides insight into training methods, an environment for skills development and practice, and the opportunity to share ideas with other trainers. Certification requirements include:

  • attending the ITS Training of Technical Trainers workshop;
  • acting as an assistant for a computer-oriented workshop (optional);
  • receiving an acceptable evaluation by an ITS-Training staff member or other approved person on presenting a computer-oriented workshop; and
