Session One (9:30 – 10:20 AM)
- Once Upon a Time.... Windows 8 First Look—Kevin Dean
- Windows 8 is coming! It’s Windows reimagined and reinvented from a solid core of Windows 7 speed, reliability, and security. It’s fast, fluid, and made to work on a variety of form factors — especially the new generation of touch devices. Windows 8 focuses on people and apps and gives you powerful new ways to use social technologies to connect with the people who are important to you. This is your chance to be one of the first to check it out. Kevin Dean will show you what’s new and how it works, how it’s a great fit for your fast-paced life.
- Digital Storytelling, The Electronic Way to Share Stories — Stace Carter & Alison Murray Levine
- Digital storytelling has picked up a lot of steam over the last year or two. But, getting started and knowing when to use a digital story is often hard to do. This session will provide real life examples of successful use of digital storytelling as a teaching tool, the software and tools available to create digital stories, on Grounds resources for creating digital stories and much more!
- What’s Cookin’ in UVaCollab and Blackboard Collaborate—Trisha Gordon
- Trisha Gordon, UVaCollab User Support Manager, whets our appetites with fresh new features coming in the Blackboard Collaborate v12 release later this summer. Trisha will also serve up a little something for everyone from a menu of new features available in the latest UVaCollab upgrade that will be sure to spice up your recipes for successful collaborations, projects, research, and instruction. Some of these tempting morsels are homegrown right here at UVa while others come from exotic locales. All promise to satisfy your craving for productivity and innovation!
- A Storied Production: Email Management, Made by You — Dawn Sprouse
- Have you ever thought: I could save myself seconds, maybe even minutes or hours, if I just knew how to do this or that?!? Come join us, to discuss all things UVa Email related. We will be producing a once-in-a-lifetime discussion on how you can improve your email management with small tips, tricks, tools, and UVa available platforms — all learned and shared by you.
Session Two (10:30 – 11:20 AM)
- Tales from Tech Support: What the Tech Support Staff Wishes You Knew — Dave Strite, Matt Litchfield, Tracy Smith
- Technology is wonderful...when it works. When it fails, it fails hard and always at the wrong time. However, there are a lot of things users can do to prevent a system from failing or to protect their computers and have them work faster. Join Dave, Matt, and Tracy as they share with you tips for keeping your technology working well. You’ll also learn some of the basic information your tech support people have to know to be able to fix your computer and why they need that information. The more you know, the faster tech support can have you back up and running at peak speed.
- Does Email Control Your Life? — Caroline Walters
- Are you overwhelmed by email? Do you check your email, morning, noon and night? Are you compelled to check email every five minutes? Well, this session will discuss these issues and provide real world solutions for helping to control that email monster in your life for your work life and your personal life. Every person should take away one hint or trick to reduce the impact of email in your life.
- OneNote 2010: Organizing Your Story — Kevin Dean
- It is the coolest software you’ve never heard of and should be using. Reduce the clutter and stress — keep tabs on your LIFE! On your PC, phone or the Web, OneNote goes everywhere. Capture text, images, video and audio notes, and keep important information readily available in one place. It’s likely that you have OneNote already installed. If not, it’s free (to UVa staff) and easy to use. Come learn all about using OneNote to become more organized. You’ll love it!
- Turning the Page to a New OS: MountainLion
- Apple is introducing a new operating system called MountainLion. Don’t miss your chance for a first look at this newest offering from Apple and see what new features and tools have been built in. It’s a new year and a time to turn the page to the newest operating system. Come find out why all the Mac users can’t wait to see and use MountainLion!
Session Three (11:30 AM – 12:20 PM)
- Take Back Your Life’s Story with Email — Kevin Dean
- Does Outlook open to your inbox in the morning? Do you look at the inbox all day, using it as your to-do list? Are you a slave to the hundreds of emails pouring in to your inbox each day? How about a different approach? A system where you determine what’s important; you determine the priority on how to spend your time. Take Back Your Life provides a solution for managing the huge volume of email you receive and in so doing, puts you in control, reduces your stress, and gives you a greater sense of accomplishment each day. It takes some effort, but it works!
- Does Your Social Media Presence Tell the Story You Think It Does? — Stormy Stark
- As social media becomes more and more prevalent (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, etc.), it can be easy to use it and lose the big picture in the day-to-day updates and items we post. In this session, we’ll explore some social media best practices and we will look at real examples of social media profiles to see if the story people think their profile is telling is the story the information they have shared is actually telling.
- The Story of Your Mobile Use — Jamie Yowell
- It is the accessory no one leaves home without, but are you certain you are maximizing your mobile device usage? Do you wonder if you need Wi-Fi, 3G or 4G? Wondering if the device that best fits your life is a Smartphone? Confused about the difference between Androids and iPhones? Wondering if you need a tablet, a Smartphone, or both? This is the session for you! Join mobile technology experts as they show you exactly what types of devices and options you have to go mobile and global and get your questions answered right away. It is your story, tell it on the mobile device that is best for you.
- A New Chapter: Everyone Can Do Tech Support — Laura Sprung, Kristin Palmer
- The idea of tech support can be intimidating but it doesn’t have to be. If you know how to fix copier paper jams or change printer ink cartridges, you are doing some tech support. But, did you know that there are a lot of resources available free of charge for people needing to know more technology information here at UVa? Come learn all about the tools and information (and how to find it) that ITS has for tech support people and those just beginning a tech support role. With a little bit of knowledge and the willingness to learn, anyone can do tech support here at UVa.

- Don’t Let the Story of Your Life Become a Disaster — Dawn Sprouse, Devin Herod
- When life turns sideways, do you have the technology that can help make an emergency more manageable? Come join us and learn about the tools and applications that you may want to consider adding to your emergency kit at work, on the road, or at home.
- Control Your Information Before It Controls You! — Caroline Walters
- Do you waste time looking for files on your computer or shared space? Feel overwhelmed by all the folders or are not sure you have the most up-to-date version of form or document? This will session will review basic organizational skills for electronic files. Learn easy to follow rules and tips for maintaining control over your electronically stored information, so it does not control you!
- Using Word to Write the Story of Your Life — Stormy Stark
- You use Word 2010 every day to complete daily tasks. The trick to working faster and smarter in Word is to know how to use the best tools and where to find them on the ribbons. Join Stormy as she shows shortcuts to headers, footers, and page numbers, shows exactly how tables of content work, explains footnotes and endnotes, and explores plenty of Word tips and tricks to make your daily story be told more easily.
- It is Your Story, Read It the Way YOU Choose: eReaders — Mark Smith
- Apps, Kindles, Nooks, laptops, printed publications, which is the best option? How do you prefer to read your story? If the answer is an e-reader (or if you have never used an e-reader); how do you know which e-reader to use? Do you know which app to load on your mobile devices to get you reading quickly? Come here all about the variety of e-reading apps and devices and get honest impressions about ease of use, device features and pitfalls, and great tips for reading electronic media!
Session Five (3 – 3:50 PM)
- Protecting Your Story with Enhanced NetBadge — Tracy Smith
- You see it every day and you enter in your id and password, but do you really understand what NetBadge is and how it works? Have you seen the announcements for Enhanced NetBadge and gone through ID Proofing but you still aren’t sure about credentials and digital certificates? Would you like to understand why NetBadge is in place and why it is so important to the UVa computing environment? If you said “yes” to anything above, come hear Tracy explain why NetBadge may be the single most important aspect of your story at UVa.
- Avoiding a Disastrous Ending: CyberDisaster Recovery — Chris Prue, Dubie Dubendorfer
- Emergency situations like natural disasters can occur in the blink of an eye. They are typically unavoidable, so the best option is to have a plan in place for how to proceed once they occur. There is a lot of focus on keeping people and property safe (which is key) but there is not always a plan in place to get technology back up and running and to resume normal business operations and communication as quickly as possible. In this session, Chris Prue and Dubie Dubendorfer highlight some strategies their departments are using to make sure whatever disaster occurs they can be functioning in a new location as quickly as possible. Come learn about storage options, new ideas for emergency preparedness, and much more.
- Financing Your Story with Excel — Shelley Payne, Susan Harris
- Excel is one of the most used software programs at the University but few people realize exactly how powerful it is and how many shortcuts there are to make your worklife easier. Excel can also be used to maintain a household budget and easily track personal (or departmental) spending. Join Shelley as she shows you expert tips and tricks to run more smoothly. While you feel the power of Excel, Susan will also help you realize the story your budget is telling and she can help you find a happy ending by examining your budget and finding opportunities to enroll in the University’s cash match program without overtaxing your budget. You’ll find out lots of great information about 2 powerful opportunities in this unique session.
