Television/Online Media Options at UVA
Several options exist for faculty, staff and students to access television/online media services in University academic buildings and residence halls. ITS's focus in this area is on providing high-speed network services through which Internet-based video content from online media providers can be accessed.
- UVA Local IPTV Service
- Commercial Internet-based Services
- Local Cable and Satellite TV Services
- Legacy UVA Cable TV Service (Retired June 30, 2017)
UVA Local IPTV Service
UVA Housing and Residence Life funds an ITS-managed IPTV service. This service provides web browser-based access to several local broadcast live TV channels and is available via on-Grounds wired and wireless network connections. The service is provided and supported for the benefit of students in UVA residence halls, but may be accessed by faculty and staff in an unsupported manner. The following channels are available:
|ABC 18||HD (High Definition)|
|My C-ville TV||SD (Standard Definition)|
|NBC Weather Plus||SD|
ITS support is available to students via the UVA Help Desk.
Note: Per agreement with content providers, this service is not accessible to UVA users connected through off-Grounds network connections, i.e. UVA users at home or elsewhere, even if using ITS VPN connections.
Commercial Internet-Based Services
Faculty, staff, and students may independently, or through their department, obtain and access various commercial online services. Services exist that provide access to on-demand content such as Netflix, Hulu, and HBO Now as well as live content such as Sling TV and PlayStation Vue. ITS does not endorse nor provide support for any of these services; those mentioned above are purely listed as examples.
Local Cable and Satellite TV Services
Local cable and satellite services may be available in certain University academic buildings. Availability is limited by service provider willingness to build infrastructure into UVA facilities as well as UVA Facilities Management and Office of the Architect restrictions on the installation of satellite dishes. Departments interested in pursuing this possible option must submit requests to ITS via a Consultation Service Request. ITS will assist departments with exploring available options. This option is not available for individual faculty, staff, and students.
- Cable television service at the Inn at Darden (Darden School of Business) should be reported to the Darden Gatehouse at 434-243-5000.
Legacy UVA Cable TV Service
On June 30, 2017, ITS retired the legacy, standard definition UVA Cable TV service previously available for fee in certain UVA buildings. Former customers have several replacement services available and may request a demo of these services.
