Hummingbird HostExplorer 2007

Installation and Use

Hummingbird HostExplorer provides a TN3270 terminal emulation for PCs to connect to a mainframe using a VPN to provide encryption. It also provides other terminal emulations, but does not make secure connections, so it cannot be used to connect to blue.unix.virginia.edu or other centrally maintained UNIX systems.

Installing HostExplorer

HostExplorer can be used with Windows (XP and Vista); however, for Vista, previous versions of HostExplorer need to be uninstalled prior to starting the HostExplorer installer, or installation fails.

  1. To install, first download the Host Explorer program from Software Central.
  2. Launch the HostExplorer installer.
  3. When the installer's first dialog box appears, click OK. The rest of the installation will be automatic. Note: Do not click Cancel while you wait for the installer to complete. There will be a significant period of time when the program is installing without requiring any feedback from you. Don't turn off or reboot your computer during this time. Be sure the installer has completed and closed out before restarting.

As the installation process finishes, it creates two desktop icons, one named Hummingbird Neighborhood and one named Hummingbird Connectivity 2007, as well as an item on the Windows Start menu.

Using Host Explorer

  1. To connect to a mainframe with HostExplorer, start the appropriate VPN profile.
  2. Launch HostExplorer using either of the desktop shortcuts or the Start menu. (To use the Start menu, click Start, then All Programs, then Hummingbird Connectivity 2007, then HostExplorer.)
  3. Click on the 3270 folder in the HostExplorer window.
  4. Choose the appropriate profile for your use—Model 2 or Model 5—in the dialog box that appears.
  5. Click Connect.
