Instructions by Platform/Version

Office Professional Plus 2016/2013 (for Windows)

Once you complete the order in UVA Software, please follow these instructions to install and activate the software.

Note: There are two versions of Office Professional Plus 2016 for Windows: the 32-bit version and the 64-bit version.

ITS strongly recommends using the 32-bit version of Office unless a special scenario exists that requires the 64-bit version. 64-bit installations of the Microsoft Office product are available for users who commonly use very large documents or data sets. Before choosing to download and install a 64-bit version of your Office product, please note: You must be running a supported 64-bit operating system. It is not possible to run both the 64-bit version and 32-bit versions of Office on the same computer. 64-bit versions of Office products are not compatible with 32-bit Office add-ins.

  1. Run the appropriate Click-to-Run installer that you downloaded.

Microsoft Windows 7 Professional, 8.1 Professional, and 10 Education

Note: All versions of Windows distributed through UVA Software are upgrade versions, not full versions. This means that your computer must already have a valid license for an older/existing version of the Microsoft Windows operating system or be for virtual machine use. See the Limitations on Windows Operating System Software for more information.

When you place an order through UVA Software, you will be presented with instructions about how to download an image file of the operating system you selected.

  • If you selected Windows 7 Professional, you will directly download the image file out of the Secure Download Manager.
  • If you selected Windows 8.1 Professional, you will download the image file from Microsoft's Software Download site.
  • If you selected Windows 10 Education, you will either download the image file from Microsoft's Software Download site or use the instructions below to install using the product key.

An image file will allow you to create a DVD or flash drive that you can boot from to upgrade your computer. Please following the instructions included with the order receipt to create a bootable DVD or flash drive.

An Alternate Method of Installing Windows 10 Education (In-Place Upgrade)

Did you order Windows 10 Education and are currently running Windows 7 or 8.1? If so, you can bypass the creation of the bootable disk and do an in-place upgrade of your operating system to Windows 10 Education. Please following these instructions:

  1. Use Windows Update to upgrade from the Home or Professional version of your current operating system to the Home/Professional version of Windows 10 (Control Panel > System and Security > Windows Update > Get started).
  2. After the upgrade to Windows 10 Home/Professional is complete, go to Settings > Update and security > Activation, and click: Change product key.
  3. Enter the product key from your order receipt to upgrade to Windows 10 Education.

Important: Windows 10 will be deployed through Windows Update in phases. It may take longer for this option to appear on some machines than on others. If you do not see the option to upgrade to Windows 10 through Windows Update, you can upgrade by going to Microsoft's Windows 10 Software Download Site, clicking the Download tool now button, and following the on-screen instructions.
