Off-Grounds Access to UVa Email, Files, & Resources

Email & Calendar

UVa email and calendaring services can be accessed from anywhere. See Email Accounts: UVa Email Options for faculty, staff, and students.

Faculty and staff who use the UVa Centralized Exchange Service may access this service from off-Grounds using either Outlook software on a computer, or Outlook Web App (OWA) in any Web browser.

UVa Centralized Exchange Service: Email with Centralized Calendaring

Online File Storage

Your may want to store a backup copy of your important files online. UVa provides two services for file backups: Home Directory Service and UVaCollab.

Secure Terminal & File Transfer Options

Use the Secure Shell Protocol (SSH), a software standard to support encrypted data transfer between two computers. It can be used to support secure logins, file transfers, or general purpose connects. Servers maintained by ITS require SSH-based connections in most cases.

Resources Restricted to UVa IP Addresses

Some resources are restricted to on-Grounds use only, or if off-Grounds, may be accessed by using one of the following methods.

Proxy Server visiting a restricted website (e.g., provided by the UVa library) from your own computer via a Web browser connect to the proxy server in your browser a NetBadge login and a Web browser
UVaAnywhere through Cisco VPN (Virtual Private Network) accessing restricted resources (e.g., departmental servers, Home Directory, library journals, etc.) by providing an on-Grounds IP address for all applications on your computer, thereby protecting all network traffic between your machine and UVa install UVa VPN client software have a personal digital certificate (virtually everyone at UVa has this, as it’s required to access the cavalier wireless network) and computer administrative privileges
UVaAnywhere-Lite (Web VPN)

accessing restricted Web-based resources (e.g., online journals from the library) by providing an on-Grounds IP address for your computer’s Web browser only
