ITS Linux Support
Linux Applications Available from ITS
There are several sources within ITS for Linux applications and utilities. We make no attempt to provide an up-to-date list of the moving target of applications, but this partial list notes some of the applications available in the mountable /uva/bin and /contrib/bin trees, or available for installation on your own machine via other methods.
The Linux /uva/bin tree
Here is a partial list of applications/utilities that are in the /uva/bin tree for Linux:
- ansys, xansys
- hdquota (quota information)
- idl
- jove (editor)
- maple, xmaple (technical software system for symbolic and numeric computation)
- matlab (integrated technical computing environment)
- passwd (password changing utility)
- perl (scripting language)
- perl5 (version 5 of the scripting language perl)
- procmail
- rroot
- sas
- scp (secure copy), xcp
- splus
- ssh, ssh2, xssh (secure shell)
- slogin (secure login)
- staroffice
- top (system status monitor)
- totalview
- whois (access to UVa's "whois" database)
The /linux/i386/glibc2.2 area of jeeves.itc.virginia.edu provides (as of this writing) access to the following directories familiar from your acquaintance with blue.unix: /uva (including bin, etc, and lib), /cfx, /contrib, /RPMS, and a link to StarOffice 6.0. Note that many of the applications listed above also require mounting the /common area from jeeves.itc. For technical assistance with mounting file systems, see Mounting File Systems (Linux).
The Linux /contrib/bin tree
The /contrib/bin tree for Linux contains applications that are provided as a service to the UVa community but are not fully supported by ITS. We list current applications:

Your Linux system may have its own /contrib directory for locally available but unsupported applications. As always with UNIX/Linux systems, path makes a difference!
For Installation via Other Methods
The following applications are also available for installation on your machine. The linked pages provide more information on obtaining the package, licensing, and installation issues.
- IDL (software for data analysis, visualization, and cross-platform application development)
- Labview (a graphical programming development environment)
- Maple (technical software system for symbolic and numeric computation)
- Matlab (Integrated technical computing environment)
- Mathematica (Virtual instrument data acquisition/analysis software)
- Stata (programmable statistical package)
- SAS (a powerful statistics program particularly useful for dealing with large data sets)
- Splus (an enhanced statistical program based on the popular S statistical package).
