ITS/UVA Projects: July 2016

  • Service Request Fulfillment

Since our last newsletter in May, the Request Fulfillment Project Team has rolled out seven new requests for services that can be made through the Service Portal. They're getting closer to making the Service Portal the one-stop shop for over 100 ITS services!

You can now make requests for the following services:
  • Security Scanning: Web Application Security Vulnerability Scanning
  • University Records Management Applications
  • Certificate of Records Destruction
  • Non-Employee/Contractor account request
  • Email and Calendar for Employees (Outlook/Exchange)
  • Server Hosting (Data Center) – New Installation
  • Server Hosting (Data Center) – Disconnect
See a list of all service requests available through the Service Portal. Please let ITS know if they've missed any.

  • University Business Intelligence (UBI) Rollout

UBI, UVA’s new reporting and analytics tool, will eventually replace the Discoverer transactional reporting tool while also offering robust dashboards, visualizations, and opportunities for in-depth data analysis.

The rollout has started and will continue for the first user group, those who access GA data, through early September. This first user group includes ~800 users across all of the Universities Schools and Units. The UBI website is a great place to get information about the tool, rollout plans, and support strategies. The UBI Community is an online community that UBI users have access to where questions can be asked and will be answered, and where training and documentation is available. It is the best first stop for users if they have questions about UBI.

For your reference, a 30 minute overview video that explains some basics about the tool, how it is accessed, what the technology needs are, etc. has been created and posted to the LSP YouTube channel.

Also, if you are interested in “clicking around”, there is a generic module available that any UVA employee can access. This Movie Database doesn’t reflect the GUI or data that is specific to UVA, but it will give you an introduction to some of the core components of the technology.

Questions? Concerns? Please send a note to and the appropriate resource will respond promptly.

  • Shibboleth Upgrade

This is a reminder that ITS upgraded Shibboleth on Monday, July 18, 2016 at 6:30 AM.

Though they do not anticipate any impact to applications using the current version of Shibboleth, the update could pose issues for customized applications. Due to this possibility, ITS asked users to test their applications prior to the upgrade by following these instructions to ensure they authenticate and function properly.

For a list of UVA applications using the Shibboleth protocol, please see this list.

After the upgrade: If you identify problems with any application on the list above, please contact and include any errors or other diagnostic information related to the failure(s).

  • Fortinet Fortimail Upgrade

Fortinet finished the initial hardware installation and configuration for the Fortimail appliance on Wednesday, July 13. Testing is anticipated to take two to three weeks. They hope to move into production in early to mid-August. Stay tuned for further announcements from ITS!
