Remember, always verify that you are on the real UVa NetBadge page first. Cybercriminals may try to trick you into revealing your UVa password by presenting a fake, lookalike NetBadge page. To check that the NetBadge screen you see is real:
- Look at the NetBadge URL in the top of your Web browser. The address should match the one pictured above, and:
- include an s (as in https), and
- match this URL exactly: https://netbadge.virginia.edu.
- If you notice any discrepancy from the official NetBadge URL, do not continue. This is the only URL you should trust. Accept no imitations, as they may indicate a phishing scam targeting members of the UVa community!
- Look at the NetBadge URL in the top of your Web browser. The address should match the one pictured above, and:
- Choose your NetBadge login method:
- Faster, more secure option: If you are on your own computer and have a UVa personal digital certificate installed, simply click the first red Log In button. Your browser may then present you with a pop-up window confirming your digital certificate selection; if so, click OK.
- Most people at UVa have this; it is required to be able to connect to University’s encrypted cavalier wireless network and the UVa Anywhere Cisco VPN.
- More typing, less secure option: Type your UVa computing ID (e.g., mst3k) and your
password on one of these compatible systems, then click the second grey Log in button.
- Applicants for admission to UVa and SCPS students must use this password login option.
- NetBadge attempts to use the credentials you just entered to log you into your desired UVa website or resource.
- If login succeeds: NetBadge automatically redirects you back to the initial UVa website you were attempting to access. That website receives your NetBadge as proof of your identity.
- If login fails: Troubleshoot:
- If you were using the password login method: Try again in case of a typo and make sure your Caps Lock key is off and your Num Lock key is on. You may also want to try the digital certificate login method instead.
- You may need to reset cookie-handling back to your browser’s default behavior; see the FAQ, “I keep getting thrown back to the NetBadge status page instead of the application I was trying to access, in an endless loop. Why is this happening?” After making the necessary changes, try again.
- Log into Enhanced NetBadge, if required. In some cases, UVa resources require an extra level of identity assurance for your protection. If, after logging into regular NetBadge, you are then presented with an additional NetBadge login screen, then you are attempting to access a website protected by Enhanced NetBadge. You will therefore also need to supply:
- your University ID number (which appears on your UVa ID card), and
- the answer to one of your personal security questions, which you set during the ID verification process.
More Information about Your NetBadge Session
Single Sign-On at UVa
After logging into NetBadge, the next time you attempt to access a UVa website that needs to know your identity, it will redirect your browser to the NetBadge service once again. This time, however, you may be spared the effort of logging in.
NetBadge detects that you have already logged in, so you can be reauthenticated without having to enter your UVa NetBadge user ID and password again.
This feature is known as “single sign-on,” and it reduces the number of times you have to log in during a single browsing session. It also simplifies the process of logging into multiple websites over a short period of time.
Length of Your NetBadge Session
The standard lifetime for this single sign-on period is:
- 9 hours on Grounds, or
- 1 hour off-Grounds
—or until you log out, whichever comes first. During this period, you may not even notice return trips to NetBadge, since they are designed to happen “behind the scenes;” if you watch closely, though, brief indications may appear in your browser’s status bar.
To protect your privacy, remember to exit your browser completely when you are finished browsing. Exiting your browser deletes the cookies the NetBadge service and other UVa websites create on your machine to remember that you are logged in. To learn more, review how to log out of NetBadge.
Checking the Status of Your NetBadge
At any time after you log in, you can check your NetBadge status to find out how much longer your NetBadge is valid, simply by returning to the direct-login NetBadge webpage. There you will also find a list of your most recent logins. (Note: If you are not currently logged into the service when you go to the NetBadge URL, it will prompt you to log in.)
