AWS (ITS-Managed Amazon Web Services)

What are ITS-Managed Amazon Web Services?

ITS-Managed Amazon Web Services (AWS) provides a range of easy-to-use web services delivered on the AWS platform, with cloud infrastructure support provided by ITS. AWS can be used for:

  • Web servers
    • Designated servers include backups & data restoration options
  • WordPress sites
  • Development Operations (DevOps)
  • Databases

Types of ITS-Managed Amazon Web Services

ITS offers two types of Managed AWS Services, depending on group requirements.

Service: Single Web Server Managed Site Services — Pilot-Mode

Best for:

  • Small groups needing a WordPress site or web server
  • Groups with websites on the Linux web cluster and running an older, unsupported version of PHP
  • Groups seeking DevOps (development operations) with highly dynamic server & database needs.

Not for: NOT for Highly Sensitive Data NOT for Highly Sensitive Data

Price:

  • Small Server (AWS: t2.nano)
    • Price: $12/month
    • Includes: 15G data volume & 5G database, 1 vCPU, 0.5 GiB RAM
  • Medium Server (AWS: t2.small)
    • Price: $23/month
    • Includes: 20G data volume & 7.5 database, 1 vCPU, 2 GiB RAM
  • Large Server (AWS: t2.medium)
    • Price: $37/month
    • Includes: 25G data volume & 10G database, 2 vCPU, 4 GiB RAM
Variable, pay-as-you-go: includes monthly totals & per-server costs (not yet fully implemented)

Reasons to Get Service:

  • Ease: ITS will create & manage the cloud network infrastructure
  • Reliability: A dedicated Linux web server, running Apache and a current version of PHP
  • Compliance: University-approved liability compliance
  • Security: ITS provides security-hardened images & security patches regularly
  • WebAdmin Access: Login access via SSH public key for a single webadmin user, with sudo commands for common operations such as restarting Apache
  • Certificates: A pre-installed SSL certificate for selected host names listed below
  • WordPress: Optionally pre-installed WordPress CMS (additional packages to be added)
  • Flexibility:
    • Delegates database resource provisioning
    • Start/stop/destroy servers & databases, list/delete volumes & backups, re-size server data volumes
  • Quick Server Setup:
    • Create secure servers, load content within ~10 minutes
    • Dynamically deploy parameterized software installs to servers
  • Smooth Transition Between Environments: Point DNS CNAME records to various servers

Backup:

  • Automatic backups with the following retention:
    • 14 daily backups
    • 4 weekly backups
    • 6 monthly backups
  • Easily create backup snapshots & clone servers from snapshots
  • Manage which servers are monitored & automatically backed up (not yet fully implemented)

Request:

To request a simple web server, WordPress site, or database, fill out the AWS Request Form & select "Single web server." To join the pilot and work with ITS to determine the production feature set, fill out the AWS Request Form & select "Managed site services — pilot consult."
