Home Directory Service

Accessing Home Directory with Macintosh OS X

This page contains links to information about downloading, installing, and using the UVA Home Directory Service with either the Login Program or the Mac OS X Finder.

  • You need an active connection to the UVA Network. If you are off Grounds, connect to the UVA Network by using the UVA Cisco VPN Client (UVA Anywhere profile), before attempting to connect to the UVA Home Directory Service.
  • Your operating system must be Macintosh OS X 10.3.9 or higher.

Downloading and Installing the HDS Software

  1. Download the UVA Home Directory Service Login Utility from UVA Software Gateway.
  2. Install the UVA Home Directory Login software:
    1. The hdv3.dmg file should automatically mount and place the UVA Home Directory Service icon on your desktop.
    2. If the .dmg file does not automatically mount, double-click on the .dmg file that will appear on your desktop. The UVA Home Directory Service icon will then appear on your desktop.
    3. Drag the icon to your applications folder.
  3. Create a dock icon by dragging the UVA Home Directory Service icon from your applications folder to your dock and drop it in.

Accessing the Home Directory Service

From the Mac, you can access the Home Directory Service using either the Login software or the Mac OS X Finder.

Access via the Login Utility

  1. Double-click on the UVA Home Directory Service icon.
  2. Type your computing ID in the computing ID field.
  3. Type in your Eservices password. If you don't know your Eservices password, you can reset it.
  4. Click Connect.
  5. Open a Finder window, double-click your Home Directory icon, and you will be able to see your files and folders. You should also have a new hard drive icon with your computing ID on your desktop.

Connecting to Other Directories (with Version 3.2 Login Software)

  1. Double-click on the UVA Home Directory Service icon.
  2. Type your computing ID in the computing ID field.
  3. Type in your Eservices password. If you don't know your Eservices password, you can reset it.
  4. Click on Other Directories, choose the director(ies) you need, and click Connect.
  5. These directories will also display on your Desktop.

Access via the Mac OS X Finder

Connecting to the UVA Home Directory Service using SMB

  1. From the Go menu across the top of your screen, choose Connect to Server.
  2. In the Server Address field type in smb://home1.storage.virginia.edu/your computing ID.
  3. If you click on the + sign next to the Server Address field, the server address will be added to your favorites list.
  4. Click Connect.
  5. In the Login window the Workgroup of Domain field should have ESERVICES in it, and your computing ID should already be filled in. Type your Eservices password into the Password field and click OK.
  6. The Home Directory Service icon will display on your Desktop.
