Microsoft Exchange at UVa

Exchange-Related Service Fees

Exchange-Related Services Offered at No Cost

There is no fee associated with:

  • Basic use of UVa’s Centralized Exchange service, and the 4 GB mailbox limit.
  • Connecting any mobile device to Exchange, including BlackBerry devices in BIS mode, via ActiveSync.

As described below, additional fees are only applicable for:

BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) Fees

The University costs for users on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server are as follows:

  • One-time RIM Enterprise license purchase: $57.08
  • Annual fee: $88.80 ($7.40 per month)

The annual amount will be pro-rated to the end of the fiscal year from the beginning of service, and handled via Inter-Deparmental Transfer (IDT). IDTs for the next fiscal year occur in July/August. The PTAO on file will be used unless ITS is notified otherwise.

Additional Mailbox Storage Fees

Extra storage beyond the provided 4 GB limit for Exchange accounts follows the same fee structure as that of other enterprise-grade disk storage rates with backup from ITS.

All disk charges are pro-rated to the fiscal year. Send email to itc-microsystems@virginia.edu for further details.

Outlook Email Software Upgrade Fees

For optimal performance, maximum functionality, and greatest security when connecting to Exchange, ITS recommends you use the latest available Microsoft email program.

Because of UVa’s partnership with Microsoft, you can upgrade your email program software to the latest version of Microsoft Office (including Outlook for the PC or the Mac) for free or at very, very low cost. (See the Microsoft Software Chooser Wizard to help you identify what software you are eligible for, at what cost.)

For most users at UVa, if you are upgrading your Microsoft Office on a University computer for work related to your job, then the license for upgrading is totally free!
