UVa Centralized Exchange Service

Connecting to UVa Exchange from Off-Grounds

Off-Grounds Exchange Configuration Options

As described at Best Practices: Remote Access to Exchange, you have several options to connect to UVa Exchange Account from off-Grounds. You can:

  • OWA: Use the Outlook Web App (OWA) from any Web browser.
    • For security, definitely use this option on shared or public computers.
  • Outlook as usual: Continue using your Outlook email program on your computer just as you do from on Grounds.
    • You may notice some slower response times and performance lags, however.
  • Outlook plus VPN: Use your Outlook email program while logged into UVa Anywhere, one of several profiles of the Cisco Virtual Private Network (VPN) at UVa.
    • This offers optimal performance, plus a more secure connection.
  • Outlook Anywhere: Configure your Outlook email program to use Outlook Anywhere (available on Windows computers only).
    • This also offers optimal performance, but without the security of the VPN.

How to Configure Outlook Anywhere for Off-Grounds Access to Exchange

(Available only in Outlook for Windows computers)

  1. In Outlook 2010, click on the File menu tab in the upper lefthand corner.
  2. With the Info tab on the left selected, click on Account Settings... button.
  3. From the Account Settings dropdown box that pops up, again choose Account Settings.
  4. Click to highlight and select your UVa Exchange Service account (e.g., Microsoft Exchange) in the Account Settings window that opens up. (It should be on the E-mail tab.)
  5. Click the Change... button just above your account name.
  6. A new dialog box opens up. Click the More Settings... button.
  7. Another dialog box opens. Select the Connection tab.
  8. At the bottom of that box, beneath Outlook Anywhere, check the box beside Connect to Microsoft Exchange using HTTP.
  9. Click the Exchange Proxy Settings... button.
  10. Yet another dialog box appears. Verify that beside the field labeled Use this URL to connect to my proxy server for Exchange: it says https://mail.eservices.virginia.edu
  11. Check the box beside Connect using SSL.
  12. Check the box beside On fast networks, connect using http first and if you are off-Grounds, check the box beside On slow networks, connect using... as well.
    • Note: If you are on Grounds, do not check the “Fast networks” option; checking the “fast networks” while on Grounds would actually degrade performance.
  13. From the dropdown menu labeled Use this authentication when connecting to my proxy server for Exchange: select NTLM Authentication.
  14. Click the OK button several times to close all the open dialog boxes and confirm your changes.
  15. Then click Next and Finish and then Close.
  16. Shut down and restart Outlook after making these changes in order to begin using Outlook Anywhere.
