Here is a brief explanation of some abbreviations as they apply to the purposes of this document:

  • IMAPInternet Message Access Protocol: Email is received and stored on the server.
  • POPPost Office Protocol: Email is downloaded and stored on your device.
  • LDAPLightweight Directory Access Protocol: A method used to access central directory information.
  • SMTPSimple Mail Transfer Protocol: The method used to send email across the Internet.

How to configure an email program on your computer or mobile device to read your UVa email account:

These IMAP and POP settings for the UVa Central Mail Service can be plugged into any email program on your computer or mobile device.

Accessing Your UVa CMS Account On a computer: Thunderbird or Mac Mail are the recommended programs for the CMS on your computer. See additional configuration info: Thunderbird 3.0 for Windows | Thunderbird 3.0 for Mac | Mac Mail.

On the Web: The CMS may also be accessed online from anywhere, via UVa WebMail.

These IMAP and POP settings for the UVa Centralized Exchange Service can be plugged into any email program on your computer or mobile device.

Accessing Your UVa Exchange Account On a computer: Outlook (on a PC) or Entourage (on a Mac) are the recommended programs for Exchange on your computer. Additional configuration info for these programs at Microsoft Exchange at UVa.

On the Web: Exchange may also be accessed online from anywhere, via Outlook Web Access (OWA).

UVa Gmail

These IMAP and POP settings for UVa Gmail can be plugged into any email program on your computer or mobile device.

Username Your full @virginia.edu address; e.g., mst3k@virginia.edu.
Password For Web access: The password you use to log into NetBadge. (forgotten it?)

For IMAP/POP access: Set directly with Google (not UVa).

To do this: log into your UVa Gmail account through NetBadge. Click on Settings, and then the Accounts tab. Use the Change Password: link to reset your existing UVa Gmail password to a secure password of your choosing.

Accessing Your UVa Gmail Account On a computer: If you have problems entering these settings into your email program, search Gmail’s support website for help.

On the Web: Your UVa Gmail account may also be accessed online from anywhere, at www.mail.virginia.edu/google.

UVa Microsoft Windows Live@edu

UVa Microsoft Windows Live@edu

UVa Microsoft Windows Live@edu service ending on March 1, 2012. ITS recommends that you migrate your UVa Microsoft Windows Live@edu account email to UVa Gmail, starting no later than Feb. 21, 2012.

These POP settings for UVa Microsoft Windows Live@edu can be plugged into any email program on your computer or mobile device.

Username Your full @virginia.edu address; e.g., mst3k@virginia.edu.
Password For Web access: The password you use to log into NetBadge. (forgotten it?)

For POP access: Set directly with Microsoft (not UVa). Use the password you were required to set up directly with Live the first time you logged in, when your account was first created. If you do not remember this password, reset it to a secure password of your choosing.

To do this: log into your UVa Live account through NetBadge. Click on Options, then More Options. Under Manage your account, click View and edit your personal information. Next to Password, click Change.
