Accessing Your CMS WebMail Settings
- Connect to the UVa Email Switchboard. If needed, authenticate through NetBadge to view your Inbox and select UVa Central Mail Service (CMS).
- Click the Settings tab near the top of the screen.
- Select from the lefthand list of links: WebMail Settings, CMS Settings, Client Settings, or Misc to review or change the desired settings.
- After making any configuration changes, click the Update button to save.
Display Appearance
Display All Account Mailboxes. Select Yes to display all email folders, or “mailboxes,” in the mailbox listing. Select No if you do not want to view your account mailboxes. This option must be set to No if you are using the Display Subscribed Mailboxes option. Default setting is Yes.
Display Subscribed Mailboxes. This option works in conjunction with the Display All Account Mailboxes. Select Yes to display your subscribed email folders, or “mailboxes.” Select No if you do not want to view your subscribed mailboxes. You can choose to which mailboxes you want to subscribe by clicking on the Subscribed Mailboxes link and adding or removing mailbox names. Default setting is Yes.
Interface buttons. The default WebMail interface displays icons for mailbox functions. If you prefer a simpler interface with text labels and fewer options, set the interface to text, which often displays more quickly and is recommended for those with slower Internet connections. You must Update and log out for this setting to take effect. Default setting is icons.
Setting a Signature & Other Composer Settings
Signature. You may set a signature to be added to the bottom of each message you send. Type your desired signature text into the box labeled Signature. For example:

From Address. Type your email address as you would like to see it in the From: field of the email headers. For example: “Mike S. Thomas” <mst3k@cms.mail.virginia.edu>
Reply Header. You can change the information displayed in header section of reply emails by removing or editing the following values: ^T=time, ^N=new line, ^F=sender. Default setting is On ^T^N ^F, which yields something like this example:
“On Saturday, Jan. 1, at 3:34 pm, John wrote:”
Reply Quoting. You can change or remove the prefix CMS WebMail adds to each line of the original email's text when you reply. Default setting is >.
Save Sent Messages in. You can specify an existing folder in which CMS WebMail can automatically save email messages you send. Most CMS accounts already have a Sent or similarly named mailbox, which is a good place to store copies of outgoing messages. Default setting is (), which means outgoing messages are not saved.
Store Draft Messages in. You can specify an existing folder in which CMS WebMail can save draft email messages. If you select a location in which to save messages in progress, a button will appear at the bottom of every Compose window, giving you the option to save a message in progress to the mailbox you set as your drafts mailbox. Default setting is (), which means drafts cannot be saved.
Mime Encode Headers. You can choose whether CMS WebMail will encode headers in Mime format (recommended) by selecting Yes. Headers will not be encoded if you select No. Default setting is Yes.
Text Columns. You can choose a column width for messages. Default setting is 78 characters.
Auto Wrap. You can configure CMS WebMail to auto wrap text as you type by selecting Flowed. Select No to turn off this feature or Fixed if you want CMS WebMail to wrap at the column width specified above. Default setting is Flowed.
Text Encoding Settings
Preferred Character Set. You can change the default character set. Default setting is Western European (ISO).
Use Unicode (UTF-8) for. You can use Unicode (UTF-8) for Reading, Reading and Composing, or Nothing. Default setting is Nothing.
Mailbox Viewer Settings
Display. You can choose how many messages to display per page. Default setting is 20.
Refresh Every. To change how often the mailbox is refreshed (e.g., how often CMS WebMail checks for new email messages), choose a value in the Refresh Every box. Default setting is every 5 minutes.
Fields. To specify which heading fields you wish to view when looking at a mailbox, select Custom and specify/sort them using the following Sort option. To keep WebMail default fields, leave Default selected.
Sort. To change the the order in which messages are displayed in your Inbox and mailboxes, click the radio button to change from the default sort setting of time Received. Other options for sort order are: Status (e.g., new, unread, read); From; Subject; and Size.
Reverse. To change the sorted message display order from the default of Reverse, or descending order, to ascending order, set Reverse to No. Default setting is Yes.
Message Viewer Settings
Use Message Charset. To use the character set defined in an incoming message (for foreign language encoding), set Use Message Charset to Yes. Default setting is No.
Show HTML. To show HTML included in messages in a smaller frame inside of your message (instead of the default full view of HTML content in the message window), set Show HTML to in frame. Default setting is inline.
Display Links. You may want links in email messages be displayed Directly, or you may prefer that links automatically be Disabled. Default setting is to Safely display links.
Display Images. You may want images in email messages to be displayed Directly, or you may prefer that images automatically be Disabled. Default setting is to Safely display images.
Fields. To re-order the way message fields display inside a mailbox, set Fields to Custom. In the editable field boxes that result, type the names of the fields in the order you would like them to appear.
Trash Management Settings
Trash Mailbox. Choose folder in which to store deleted messages. Default setting is Trash.
Message Delete Method. You can choose to delete unwanted messages Immediately, or Move to Trash—which moves selected messages to the trash folder specified in the previous option—or Mark them as deleted, but leave them in the mailbox. Default setting is Immediately.
Keep Message Received Time. Choose Yes to retain the message received time when deleted and moved to Trash. Default setting is No.
Trash Older than [ ] is Removed On Logout. You can specify how long messages are held if they are moved to Trash instead of deleted immediately. Default setting is 60 days.
