The UVa Central Mail Service (CMS)
Configure Thunderbird 3.0 on Windows for the CMS
Thunderbird Configuration Information
- Open Thunderbird.
- From the Tools drop-down menu, select Account Settings.
- Click the Account Actions button at the lower left-hand side of the screen.
- If you already have a working CMS account set up, select that account and skip to step 20.
- Select Add Mail Account…
- In the Your name: field, type your name as you would like it to appear in outgoing messages.
- In the Email address: field, type your email address, something similar to YourUVaComputingID@virginia.edu. For example, if your UVa computing ID is mst3k, you would type mst3k@virginia.edu.
- In the Password: field, type your CMS email password.
If you do not know your CMS password (which may differ from your NetBadge password), please contact the Accounts Office (email to accounts@Virginia.edu from your UVa email account) to request a reset of your CMS password. - Uncheck the check box to Remember password.
- Click the Continue button.
- If needed, click the Stop button.
- Click the Edit button.
- In the Mail Account Setup window, in the Incoming: field, type cms.mail.virginia.edu.
- Check the protocol used drop-down menu. If necessary, switch from POP to IMAP.
- Select SSL/TLS from the Secure Connection drop-down menu.
- In the Outgoing: field, type cms.mail.virginia.edu.
- Select StartTLS from the Secure Connection drop-down menu.
- Select the Re-test Configuration button.
- Click the Manual Configuration button.
- In the Account Settings left window, click Server Settings for this account.
- Verify that the checkbox for Use Secure Authentication is clear – if it is not, click in the checkbox to clear it.
- Verify that Connection Security is set to STARTTLS.
- In the Account Settings window, click Outgoing Server (SMTP)
- Select the server for cms.mail.virginia.edu
- Click Edit
- Verify Port 587
- Check Use name and password ( and put your user id eg: mst3k) in User Name.
- Uncheck use secure authentication
- Set Connection security: to STARTTLS
- Click the OK button.
