Configure Thunderbird 3.0 on Windows for the CMS

Thunderbird Configuration Information

  1. Open Thunderbird.
  2. From the Tools drop-down menu, select Account Settings.
  3. Click the Account Actions button at the lower left-hand side of the screen.
  4. If you already have a working CMS account set up, select that account and skip to step 20.
  5. Select Add Mail Account…
  6. In the Your name: field, type your name as you would like it to appear in outgoing messages.
  7. In the Email address: field, type your email address, something similar to YourUVaComputingID@virginia.edu. For example, if your UVa computing ID is mst3k, you would type mst3k@virginia.edu.
  8. In the Password: field, type your CMS email password.
    If you do not know your CMS password (which may differ from your NetBadge password), please contact the Accounts Office (email to accounts@Virginia.edu from your UVa email account) to request a reset of your CMS password.
  9. Uncheck the check box to Remember password.
  10. Click the Continue button.
  11. If needed, click the Stop button.
  12. Click the Edit button.
  13. In the Mail Account Setup window, in the Incoming: field, type cms.mail.virginia.edu.
  14. Check the protocol used drop-down menu. If necessary, switch from POP to IMAP.
  15. Select SSL/TLS from the Secure Connection drop-down menu.
  16. In the Outgoing: field, type cms.mail.virginia.edu.
  17. Select StartTLS from the Secure Connection drop-down menu.
  18. Select the Re-test Configuration button.
  19. Click the Manual Configuration button.
  20. In the Account Settings left window, click Server Settings for this account.
  21. Verify that the checkbox for Use Secure Authentication is clear – if it is not, click in the checkbox to clear it.
  22. Verify that Connection Security is set to STARTTLS.
  23. In the Account Settings window, click Outgoing Server (SMTP)
  24. Select the server for cms.mail.virginia.edu
  25. Click Edit
  26. Verify Port 587
  27. Check Use name and password ( and put your user id eg: mst3k) in User Name.
  28. Uncheck use secure authentication
  29. Set Connection security: to STARTTLS
  30. Click the OK button.
