Mac Mail under Snow Leopard: Configuring Outgoing Mail
Users of new or upgraded Macintosh computers running the Snow Leopard operating system (Mac OS X version 10.6) may experience a problem with auto configuration of outgoing mail in Mac Mail software. Messages are successfully received.
If you are having trouble sending messages in Snow Leopard using Mac Mail:
- Check all of your email configuration settings.
- In addition to these configuration settings, please remember to check
your Secure Connections Settings. To do this:
- Click on the Mail menu option at the top of the page.
- Click on the Preferences option from the Mail menu.
- The Accounts window will appear. Click on the Advanced tab.
- Near the bottom of the screen, make sure the checkbox for Use SSL is checked (enabled), and Authentication is set to Password. (Older Apple mail versions may accomplish the same thing with a checkbox for Password Security or Secure Authentication — it should be unchecked.
- Click on the Account Information tab.
- Click the drop-down list for Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): options.
- Click on the option for Edit Server List.
- The Edit Server List window will appear. Select the Advanced tab. Near the bottom of this window is a secondary checkbox — Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) — that needs to be checked (enabled). Set Authentication to: Password. Put your UVa Computing ID (e.g., mst3k) in the User name: box. (You will be prompted for your password on first use if it is not already in your keychain.)
